History

Tulgeen has been providing services to people with disability in the Bega Valley for over 40 years.

The organisation was formed in the mid 1970’s after Bob Westmacott wrote to the Grosvenor Hospital in Sydney requesting assistance and support in developing facilities for people with disability in the Bega area. The result was a steering committee was formed to drive the project.

Formal services began in 1977 at 26 Eden St Bega one day per week with voluntary hours.

International Year of People with Disability in 1981 saw Tulgeen as the forerunner in the State with its program including school children in the daily participation of the Centre.

Former Tulgeen Board Member Gae Rheinberger prepared a comprehensive account of the history of Tulgeen. Click here to read Honouring Tulgeen’s History
