Initial Motivation

Grattan’s journey with the Tulgeen board began in 2014 when he answered an advertisement seeking directors. However, his relationship with Tulgeen dates back to 2006 through his work at Bega Cheese. “I’ve always been drawn to giving back to the community,” he admits. During his time at Bega Cheese, he collaborated with Tulgeen on supported employment programs, including the cheese processing program, which further solidified his interest and involvement. It was this sense of duty and an existing relationship with Tulgeen that motivated him to join the board.

Challenges and Triumphs

Grattan’s tenure on the board was not without its difficulties. “When I came on, things were financially not too great,” he recalls. Some of the tough decisions throughout the years included closing down unprofitable ventures like Stitch and Prints and the work crew about three years ago. Despite these setbacks, Grattan and the board fought hard to maintain essential employment services, recognising the critical role that work plays in providing dignity, income, and skills to individuals.

One of the significant challenges was the transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). “That was a big challenge,” Grattan notes. Securing funding for new projects like Elliot Lane was critical, although its promise is yet to be fully realised, partly due to the impacts of COVID-19.

Proud Achievements

Grattan takes pride in several accomplishments during his time on the voluntary board, which required significant commitment from all directors. “I’m proud that we were able to grow the client base from forty-something to over a hundred and thirty.” Under his leadership, Tulgeen navigated the transition to NDIS and secured essential funding for projects despite the challenges.

The flourishing of the nursery is another highlight. “It’s a tough competitive area, but the improvements we’ve made are starting to show,” Grattan says, noting that the nursery now enjoys a much better reputation than it did a decade ago.

Grattan is also proud of the board’s evolution during his tenure. “We’ve brought in more commercially focused and diversified directors,” he explains. This strategic shift has been instrumental in steering Tulgeen through financial and operational challenges.

Leadership Transitions

Over Grattan’s tenure, he has seen significant changes in the leadership at Tulgeen, including the periods where he himself acted as the interim CEO during challenging transitions. With Ben Smith now solidly in place as CEO and a strong leadership team supporting him, Tulgeen is in a good position to continue its mission and thrive in the years ahead.

Legacy and Future Hopes

Reflecting on his legacy, Grattan hopes to leave Tulgeen in a better state than when he joined. “I believe Tulgeen is a better organisation now,” he says. While acknowledging ongoing financial challenges, Grattan is confident in Tulgeen’s ability to survive and thrive. “I’m proud of the passion our workers have for their clients. Their dedication is evident in everything they do.”

Grattan’s message to the Tulgeen community is one of continued cooperation and focus on the clients. “Think of one Tulgeen, not individual bits,” he advises. He also emphasises the importance of listening to feedback and striving for continuous improvement.

Message from the New Chair

Fay Steward, the newly appointed Chair of Tulgeen, shares her thoughts on Grattan’s departure and the path forward for the organisation. “I’d like to recognise the valuable contribution Grattan has made to Tulgeen and his ongoing commitment which began in 2006 through the supported employment partnership with Bega Cheese. During Grattan’s 10 years on the Board, we have increased client numbers from 40 to 120, transitioned to the NDIS, ingrained a commercial-for-purpose focus across the organisation, improved the Riverside Nursery to a high standard, and started to evolve our social enterprises. Grattan has always been willing to step in when needed, taking on stints as Acting CEO during challenging transition periods. Grattan said there is still much to be done to deliver on our Vision, and he is confident in the new team leading Tulgeen into the future.”

Conclusion

As Grattan Smith steps down from the Tulgeen board, he leaves behind a legacy of resilience, growth, and unwavering commitment to the community. His decade of service, including six years as Chair, has set a strong foundation for Tulgeen’s future, ensuring that it remains a pillar of support for many years to come. With Ben Smith now firmly in place as CEO and a robust leadership team supporting him, Tulgeen is well-positioned to continue realising its mission and fostering an inclusive community.
